In my head: Fazly's thoughts on Left Behind

The main inspiration for Left Behind was actually another song that was
written by Ryan Star of Rockstar Supernova fame called 'Back of your Car'. I
had heard the song on the show and wanted to write a song with a similar
tone i.e. dark, dramatic but hopeful song.

I had actually come up with the title Left Behind first and started to write
the song around the title which is often the case with my songs. I wanted
the overall tone of the song to be rather dark so I came up with a very
heavy and distorted guitar parts that had a repeating motif underneath. The
final cut of the song however only introduces the motif during the intro and
ending but it still helped to set the mood for the song.

Lyrically I wanted to convey the story of someone who found himself looking
back at his life and at all the choices that he's made. In retrospect he saw
that he had abandoned many things that were true too him in living his life
and questioning the path that he's taken.  However despite having made some
wrong choices along the way he can still find a way to get back on the right
path because it's never too late to change i.e. leaving the past behind and
looking forward to the future.

For this particular song the music came first. The whole song was actually built upon that opening riff and added the lyrics afterward. I would record a backing track drums and guitars and work on the melody and lyrics. There have been other songs where the vocals guided the chord progression too so its not really a fixed approach for me. It just depends on whether I come with a guitar riff or a vocal melody first.

Cool stuff. The title is usually last for me. Or it's one of the lines of the lyrics that make me go..."heh, this can be the name of the song." Lyrics or music came first?
